Drug and alcohol addiction are very prevalent problems in Massachusetts. Job descriptions include staff responsibilities, eligibility, and knowledge, skills and abilities needed to deliver services. Ideally, eligibility to deliver services includes lived experience recovering from substance use disorders and the ability to reflect recovery principles. The Minnesota Association of Sober Homes, Inc., or M.A.S.H. for short, was formed in the summer of 2007 in an attempt to form a unified voice for owners of sober houses in situations where a public voice became necessary. MASH is a NARR state affiliate for recovery residences. There are many reasons why some choose sober living rather than simply exiting treatment to live with friends and family members or to live alone.

Resident and staff orientations include how to greet and interact with neighbors and/or concerned parties. Policies and procedures provide neighbors with the responsible person’s contact information upon request. Community gatherings, recreational events and/or other social activities occur periodically. Documentation that residents are oriented to emergency procedures.

Verification that kitchen and dining area(s) are large enough to accommodate all residents sharing meals together. Verification that a meeting space is large enough to accommodate all residents. Verification that each resident has personal item storage. Policies and procedures for ongoing performance development of staff appropriate to staff roles and residence level. Policies that value individuals chosen for leadership roles who are versed and trained in the Social Model of recovery and best practices of the profession. Evidence that staff are encouraged to have a network of support.

Since sober living houses are not considered formal treatment, public and private funders will not usually cover the fees since they are not medically-based. Residents can look into entitlement programs or other financial assistance, maybe from loved ones. Most individuals must secure employment to pay for their sober living house rent and fees.

Although there are many sober houses in the Massachusetts area, finding a sober living environment that is close to your friends, family or place of employment may prove to be a challenging task. Space is limited in sober living environments which means that you may find it difficult to find a facility that has adequate housing available for your individual needs. Effective September 1, 2016, state agencies and their vendors are only able to refer clients to certified alcohol and drug-free (ADF) housing.

These standards were developed using a collaborative approach with input from regional and national recovery housing organizations. MASH is an affiliate of NARR and used these standards to create Massachusetts standards for certified sober homes. NARR has since released two updates to the standards, first in October 2015 and then in 2018.
